{"id":1365,"date":"2021-05-12T08:19:12","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T12:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/covidqanda.org\/?p=1365"},"modified":"2021-05-12T08:19:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-12T12:19:12","slug":"do-kids-ages-12-15-get-the-same-formulation-and-or-dose-as-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/covidqanda.org\/?p=1365","title":{"rendered":"Do kids ages 12-15 get the same formulation and\/or dose as adults?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Question:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0With FDA&#8217;s authorization of Pfizer for adolescents, do we know how it will be rolled out?\u00a0 For example, do adolescents ages 12-15 get the same formulation and\/or dose?\u00a0 Would they get vaccinated through school?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Answer:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0On May 10th, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-emergency-use\">FDA granted emergency use authorization<\/a> for the use of the Pfizer vaccine in adolescents ages 12-15 and at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/acip\/meetings\/index.html\">11:30am today, CDC&#8217;s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet<\/a>\u00a0to discuss and offer recommendations.\u00a0 In answer to your questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pfizer&#8217;s vaccine formulation and delivery is the same for everyone ages 12+: intramuscular injection administered as a series of two doses (0.3 mL each) 3 weeks apart (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144413\/download\">FDA<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Vaccine distribution plans vary by state and locality.&nbsp; School-based vaccination programs have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/11\/health\/covid-vaccination-younger-teens.html?referringSource=articleShare\">already begun in some locales <\/a>in order to reach older adolescents (ages 16+) and will likely further expand to reach younger adolescents.&nbsp; Additionally, just last week the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/05\/04\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-covid-19-response-and-the-vaccination-program\/\"> President announced plans<\/a> to soon begin shipping vaccines directly to pediatricians, alongside other plans to expand vaccine&nbsp;access.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/144413\/download\">FDA&#8217;s Fact Sheet for Healthcare Providers<\/a>&nbsp;offers a synthesis of the Pfizer vaccine, including its safety and efficacy in adolescents ages 12-15.&nbsp; Several folks have asked me to share more details about the vaccine safety and efficacy in younger adolescents, so I&#8217;ll aim to provide an overview in tomorrow&#8217;s Q&amp;A building from the information shared by FDA and during today&#8217;s ACIP meeting.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Question:\u00a0With FDA&#8217;s authorization of Pfizer for adolescents, do we know how it will be rolled out?\u00a0 For example, do adolescents ages 12-15 get the same formulation and\/or dose?\u00a0 Would they get vaccinated through school?
