{"id":1141,"date":"2021-02-16T08:51:15","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T13:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/covidqanda.org\/?p=1141"},"modified":"2021-02-16T08:51:15","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T13:51:15","slug":"are-symptoms-from-the-uk-variant-different","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/covidqanda.org\/?p=1141","title":{"rendered":"Are symptoms from the UK variant different?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Question:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0I read that the UK variant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rochelle-walensky-cdc-director-uk-strain-coronavirus-face-the-nation\/\">could become the dominant strain<\/a> in the US in March.\u00a0 Are the symptoms from the UK variant the same as those of the original virus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Answer:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Scientists in the UK have been examining whether symptoms associated with the UK variant (B.1.1.7) differ from those associated with the original virus.\u00a0 I&#8217;m aware of two different surveys that are examining this issue&#8211; 1) the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/conditionsanddiseases\/articles\/coronaviruscovid19infectionsinthecommunityinengland\/characteristicsofpeopletestingpositiveforcovid19inengland27january2021#symptoms-profile-by-cases-compatible-with-the-new-uk-variant-and-other-positive-cases\">UK Office of National Statistics COVID-19 Infection Survey<\/a> and 2) the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/214693\/covid-19-linked-with-wider-symptoms-than\/\">Imperial College&#8217;s REACT survey<\/a>.\u00a0 Preliminary analyses from both surveys indicate that people who test positive for the B.1.1.7 variant are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>More likely to experience&nbsp;any symptoms;<\/li><li>More likely to experience certain symptoms like cough;<\/li><li>Just as likely to experience gastrointestinal symptoms; and<\/li><li>Less likely to experience loss of taste or smell.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Figure 1 <\/strong>provides a synthesis of the recent findings from the Office of National Statistics.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Figure 1.
